As globalization continues to rapidly spread worldwide, foreign language proficiency becomes more-and-more important as an essential communication skill required to express one’s opinion precisely across international borders.

The Faculty of Foreign Studies addresses the needs of ambitious, determined students, who want to be “players” on the international scene and who understand that both their personal success and the success of the people around them will depend on their becoming multi-lingual citizens of the global community. Without exception, mastering a foreign language requires the development of four separate, but interrelated skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. But language is much more than grammar and vocabulary; language is a reflection of the “soul” of a culture, hence, it is necessary to study both the history and the contemporary society of the country where a language is spoken. Fortunately, in a great number of countries, English is spoken as a “common” language. A command of English gives one a “leg up” on the road to success.

At the Faculty of Foreign Studies, the door is wide open to those students who:
  1. strive to become international business people
  2. want to be involved in the international cooperation activities of NPOs (non-profit organization) and NGOs (non-governmental organization)
  3. aim to work in the air-travel or tourism industries
  4. desire to become a Japanese language teacher somewhere outside of Japan or a foreign language teacher in Japan.

Department of English

English taught by native-speaking English teachers

Immediately after enrollment at NGU, students will take several classes in English taught by native-speaking English teachers. For example, in English 105 (Special Project English), students select one or more project topics to research in depth. This requires that they apply their knowledge and English language skills developed in other English classes and that they report the results of their research in an English presentation to their classmates. In TOEIC English 500, the course goal is to raise all students’ TOEIC test scores to a minimum of 500 points. All such English classes are taught intensively and are to improve students' command of English to insure their future success as "players" on the global stage.

Practical knowledge acquired from teachers with business experiences

Classes entitled “Career Development” are designed to give students practical knowledge on a wide variety of business practices, as well as of the type of English used in actual business activities, and are taught by teachers with extensive business experience, working both in Japan and abroad. Teachers' fields of business expertise include: the travel industry, airlines, finance, international trade and automobile manufacturing. Teachers help students apply for overseas internship programs, “business study tours” and other valuable programs that foster their English language skills. In addition, teachers give students general advice on how to search for and choose the best career for themselves.

“Business English” for tourism and airline-related work

In the class category of ESP (English for Special Purposes), courses are offered in “Tourism English,” “Airline English” and “Introduction to the skill of simultaneous interpreting of English.” Students can choose classes that best fit their future pathways. There are also highly practical classes, such as “Making a Business Presentation in English”, “General Business English” and “Translating Business English,” where students encounter “living English”.
