A Time for Graduate Education

It is a curious thing about these uncertain times that more and more people have shown an interest in graduate education. It seems that both traditional students and working people have come to feel the need for advanced knowledge and keen analytic abilities to be able to navigate the waters of our unpredictable social order. Aware of this trend, we started a new MA program last year in International Culture and Communication. Its fundamental concept is Japan in Asia and Asia in Japan, and the program has a focus on Southeast Asia, South Asia, and China. As the program enters its second year we look forward to the completion of the first research projects.
At the same time our English Studies MA program has seen an increased influx of students. Popular majors are English Education, Linguistics (English and Japanese, theoretical and applied), and British and American literature, including Young Adult and
Children’s Literature.

Our distance learning programs continue to appeal to large numbers of educators and workers in a variety of fields. Last year saw the establishment of the PhD in English Studies, the first such distance learning program in Japan. We feel honored to be able to make it possible for busy people to continue with their academic careers.

Our faculty members continue to inspire graduate students with a genuine passion for research.
